ERTMS Deployment on Live Railway Networks
Circet Energy is supporting the large‑scale rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) across operational railway lines in Italy. The project includes the integrated installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and the GSM‑R railway radio infrastructure, delivered under strict safety and operational constraints.

THE CHALLENGE
Rolling out the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on live railway lines required the coordinated installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and GSM‑R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) radio communication infrastructure within limited track possession windows, while meeting the highest railway safety and certification standards before commissioning.

Our approach
Delivering ERTMS in motion
Multi-region consortium execution
Working within the Hitachi Rail and Alstom consortium, Circet Energy deploys ERTMS across operational railway lines in Lazio, Umbria and Sicily. Delivery covers both ETCS and GSM‑R sub‑systems, managed under shared program coordination and railway safety requirements.
ETCS balise installation
Our teams install ETCS balises between the rails. These trackside transponders provide precise train positioning data and form a foundational layer of the European Train Control System architecture.
GSM-R & system interface management
In parallel, we deploy the GSM‑R railway radio network that enables communication between trains and the Radio Block Centre (RBC). Managing interfaces between ETCS signaling systems and GSM‑R telecom infrastructure ensures real‑time supervision, conflict detection and safe movement authority.
